10 Steps to an Easy Move

The key to an easy, peaceful move is organization. To help you get a general idea of what you might forget mid-move, below is a list of 10 tips that should be kept in mind for your moving checklist.

1.       Set a move date.  Let’s face it, you can’t be prepared for a date that’s nonexistent. Setting a deadline will give you a time-frame for tasks that need to be done.

2.       Change your address and make sure your mail is forwarded for at least one month after you move.  The post office, bank, cell phone provider, subscription services, insurance, doctors, attorneys, accountants and everyone else will need to be notified of your new address.

3.       Inform current and/or future utility providers about your move.  This may include cable, internet, phone, electricity, gas and water. Prior to your move-in date, notify your utility providers that you will need your services switched over to the new address on your move-in date.

4.       Measure furniture and entry ways. The last thing anyone wants is to transport furniture that won’t find through the door. Measure your furniture and doors to make sure they can get inside and fit in your new home.

5.        Hire movers or reserve a truck.  If you decide to hire movers, do your research and get a few estimates. Then remember to confirm everything one week before the big move. If you decide to conduct the move yourself, prepare with blankets and cushioning materials.

6.       Monitor your movers.  Make sure your belongings are labeled and handled with care. This will help speed up the process. It will also be efficient if you or another resident of your new home is available for any issues that might arise.

7.       Get rid of things you don’t need. If you haven’t used it, worn it, or touched it in over a year, chances are you don’t need it. Moving is the best time to declutter your belongings.

8.       Sort & Organize. Placing all of your important documents and valuables in an air seal container is the smartest way to be extra careful.

9.       Start packing early.  The best way to start pre-packing is to pretend you’re going on a vacation. Determine what you would like to wear the day of the move, with about one week worth of clothes and basic toiletries to live with for your first week unpacking in your new home. Once you’ve set that aside, you can begin to pack everything else in labeled boxes over a timely manner.

10.   Double Check Everything. To avoid an either major or minor loss, assume that you forget something. After everything is loaded in your moving vehicle, walk through your old house and check every room, closet, drawer, cabinet, shelf, and vanity for anything that you might have overlooked.
